This website, together with accomobility.co.nz, is intended as a comprehensive resource for all travellers, but especially for those seeking accessible holiday accommodation. Only establishments with accessible facilities for the disabled or the infirm may register for inclusion on this site. The site lists resort and boutique hotels, motels, private homestays, holiday parks, serviced apartments, relaxing retreats and private bed and breakfast establishments all of which provide differing levels of accessible facilities.
We also hope that the peace of mind that you obtain from knowing that your accommodation will meet all your requirements will be the first step towards enjoying your stay.
The original (New Zealand) site was developed by Lianne and Peter Kalivati in Wellington. Peter was a well respected officer in the New Zealand Police and a champion athlete before he was diagnosed with motor neuron disease (MND) in November 2006. The progressive and debilitating nature of this terminal disease meant that Peter was reliant on a wheelchair and his caregiver to manage his daily needs.
Lianne and Peter’s personal holidaying experience - particularly within New Zealand - highlighted the fact that detailed information about accessible facilities offered by individual motels and hotels can be lacking and therefore time-consuming to obtain.
“We discussed the possibilities of creating dedicated websites to help those in Australia and New Zealand - and those planning to vist from overseas - who wish to find accommodation with good quality accessible facilities.” says Lianne, “...so we teamed up with our friends Lynda Beckham and Richard Laing who as graphic designers and web developers provided the creative input to the site.”
Sadly, Peter passed away in September 2009 - some four months after the launch of the original New Zealand site. He will always be remembered for his initiative, passion and enthusiasm for creating this unique resource.
While Lianne, Richard and Lynda continue to promote and administer the New Zealand site, they are pleased to have introduced Andrew Collins as a director and representative in Australia.
